If you a college or high school student leader, or know the kind of student leader we are looking for, please contact us!
Pictured right is outstanding former "highest level" SAT member Summer Wimberly
of Ceres, California (Princeton University '10). Summer was also a panelist at the 2008 - 2010 HHEW Leaders Conference & Retreats.
ORIGIN of our SAT Program: Northern California’s Central Valley, which stretches nearly 400 miles from the north to south, is the origin of a new media genre called the news album (a combination newsletter-photo album-magazine-newspaper). CV (Coast & Valley) Decision Makers (formerly called the CV Drum News) is the nation’s first news album. This monthly publication showcases positive African-American individuals, decision-makers and organizations in the areas of Stockton, Elk Grove, Sacramento, Davis, Tracy, Modesto, the Mother Lode, Merced, Fresno, Bakersfield and the North Valley. The Central Valley is also the home of some of the nation’s top African-American student scholars. These students attend schools as diverse as the Ivies, University of California campuses, top-tier historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and many other top colleges and universities worldwide. Some of these students and alumni now serve as members of the newly expanded Decision Makers Student Ambassadors Team (SAT).
SAT (Student Ambassador Team) Overview:
An ambassador is an official representative for an organization. The Student Ambassadors Team (SAT), founded in 2008, is comprised of students attending many of the nation’s and world's top colleges and universities. We also established a high school division in 2009, when we added two high school students -- from Elk Grove and Lodi school districts in Northern California, USA. The number of active members or interns at any one time will remain between a minimum of 6 and a maximum membership not to exceed 16. SAT operates with the belief that outstanding Acknowledged African students are positioned to; 1) actively break negative cycles occurring within African-American and ALANA communities nationally and worldwide (ALANA stands for African, Latino, Asian and Native American); 2) write positively about African world issues; 3) write positively about the growing advocacy role of the Black Press of America (in particular, Decision Makers publications); 4) arrange for the TALO Leadership Theory to be discussed intelligently at their campuses and cities annually; 5) serve as student leaders on the Decision Makers advisory board; 6) attend and assist in the execution of one or more HHEW Leaders Conferences; 7) report semi-annually within Decision Makers publications about academic and campus successes they are having in college and high school; and 8) periodically contribute to the journalistic mission of Slate Hill Major Media outlets.
Being a SAT member means:
o Being listed as a student advisory board member
o Developing “an intellectual toolkit” and skill set for success
o Understanding that leadership transcends academic disciplines
o Building confidence and self-esteem through personal growth
o Receiving stellar references at the conclusion of the SAT program
o Having direct input into the media image of African world communities
o Listing the SAT program and accomplishments on your expanding resume
o Returning to your communities with an enlightened perspective of the world
o Opportunities to gain experience presenting at a professional conference
o Forming lasting friendships with students and mentors from around the world
o Receiving a Decision Makers publication each month (for you and your family)
o Being featured and prominently recognized before an inter/national audience at the annual HHEW Leaders Conference & Retreat
How are students invited to participate in the program?
Our goals are to mentor, nurture and positively encourage 6 - 16 student leaders per year for a 2 (maybe 3) year period. Because the philosophical underpinnings of INVR Standards / HHEW are transdisciplinary, recent and current, undergraduate students of all ethnicities, majoring in any field, are eligible for the SAT program. There are three ways that students are invited to participate in this free program. 1) They are nominated by HHEW Group members. 2) They are nominated by educators or former and current SAT members. 3) Each is eligible to become an entry level ambassador once s/he has successfully published two 250-300 word essays in a Decision Makers publication. Second and third level ambassadors are those successfully working toward fulfilling the majority of the points noted in the Overview. Although not mandatory, the ideal is to reach the third level. We rely on this process to help us select and monitor the best students committed to positively representing Decision Makers publications, their communities, families and schools.
